The Theory of Constraints and why it is driving further success at AW Fraser

What is it?

The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a business philosophy developed by Eliyahu Goldratt in the USA. The basis of the idea is that the growth of any organization is restricted by the biggest bottleneck in the business. The object of employing the tools of the associated theory is to align the whole organization behind the slowest or weakest part of your business and to pull the business through the constraint at the maximum rate. What this means for customers is that they can expect to receive their orders on time, quality-assured. What it means for the business is the elimination of waste and any behaviour, which is not in the customer's best interest.

While the central part of the theory is related to the manufacturing operation, it also extends strategies to other departments. As an example, we are working in the marketing department to put together offers exploiting the new quicker throughput of the factory, which means a better lead-time for the client.

What is the benefit to the client?

The key benefit to the client is that they can rely on us to deliver on time. This is achieved by always putting the promised date to the client first, even when it may appear more efficient to the manufacturing base to plan production according to the most efficient process for the actual order book. The major benefit is delivered by the sales department at AW Fraser being in charge of the production plan, which means that the client is keyed straight into the production process via their representative. This elevates the responsiveness of AW Fraser as a whole to their client and allows us to grow with our clients and cover as many unforeseen events as possible.

What is the benefit to AW Fraser?

The main benefit to AW Fraser is the reduction of stocks held in the manufacturing process. At the same time we need no more staff to achieve more manufacturing output and these factors combine to improve our international competitiveness. The other major advantage is that we spend less time worrying about expediting orders and more time on process improvement which is great for energy levels at work!

The future

As we consolidate the exciting innovations in the business we will also be looking to use the time freed up to introduce new production initiatives designed to keep us at the forefront of the industry for the foreseeable future.
